Once you have booked your spot, we will meet you in the north parking lot of Grande Pointe Park in the town of Grande Pointe. We are not in the community centre - we will be waiting for you outside near the mailboxes.
If you want to put an address into your map app, use 421 Bernat Rd, Grande Pointe, MB. Note there is no indication of the address at the park.
Grande Pointe Park can be reached from Winnipeg by taking Highway 59 (Lagimodiere) 10km south of Winnipeg - past the Perimeter Highway, past the Floodway bridge, then turning right at the first exit after the Floodway bridge (Hallama Drive). After exiting the highway, take the left (south) at the stop sign. Continue for 2.5km, over a small bridge, and the park will be on the left. Go into the entrance beside the big red chair and park near the mailboxes.
From the south, Grande Pointe Park can be reached from Highway 59 by turning left (west) on Oak Grove Road, then right (north) on Bernat Road, and continuing for 1km. Use the entrance after the outdoor rink and community centre and park near the mailboxes.
There is no bus service to Grande Pointe Park. Rideshares and taxis may be able to bring you there, but you may have trouble getting them to pick you up for the ride back.
We will provide you with kayaks, paddles, and lifejackets. You will need to bring anything else you might need. Some recommended items (depending on conditions):
Bottled water.
A snack or meal.
Sun protection, such as sunscreen and a hat.
Bug spray.
Clothes and shoes you don't mind getting muddy or wet. These should be appropriate to the temperature and based on the assumption that you will get wet.
A change of clothes and shoes in case you get muddy or wet.
After you arrive, we will do a quick review of the equipment provided, a short kayaking lesson (if desired), and a report of last known river conditions. We will carry the kayaks 100m to the launch point, and you will be helped into the kayaks and onto the water.
From there, you will head downstream (northwest) up to 3.5km depending on the river conditions. You will need to return the kayaks to the launch point. The full 7km return journey takes 2.5 hours if constantly paddling at a moderate pace. You will have a maximum of 4 hours with kayaks.
As the river is cut off by the Red River Floodway, there is no danger of going "too far", other than becoming too tired to return to the launch point. The current generally slow, making the return leg somewhat slower, but not much different than the outbound leg.
Learn more about the river and its wildlife.
Once you return the launch point, leave all equipment on the riverbank and contact us as instructed. You won't need to wait for us to return; you are free to leave at that point.
You may stay a while in Grande Pointe Park. Amenities include port-a-potties, a picnic shelter, a playground, a short nature trail, and an EV charger.
